Description:
Location: Holiday Inn Lane Avenue Time: Registration and Networking: 11:30, Lunch and presentation at 12:00 Practical Perspectives On the Fuel Crisis
Few subjects have received more press this year than the price of oil. Our blue-ribbon panel will examine practical ways that all parties in the supply chain are coping with the fuel crisis. You will hear from the following three transportation professionals:
Representing the shipper’s perspective Daniel Mullins, Corporate Transportation Manager at Worthington Industries
Representing the carrier’s perspective David Kent, Chief Financial Officer of FST Logistics
Representing the transportation broker’s perspective Michael Tobin, Managing Partner of Redhawk Global, LLC
Moderated by transportation lawyer, Marc Blubaugh of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff, LLP, this wide ranging discussion will cover such subjects as the rationales underlying the various types of fuel surcharges (per mile fuel surcharges, percentage fuel charges, automatic and non-automatic fuel surcharges), dealing with spot markets, pass-through mechanisms, efficiency measures aimed at decreasing overall fuel use, and pending federal regulation regarding fuel surcharges. Bring your questions! You are guaranteed to walk away from this panel with new ideas!

Valley METRO Light Rail ...All aboard!!
Cost to attend:
$35.00 for CSCMP Members $40.00 for Non-members $20.00 for students with a valid ID
Click here or on the button below to register.
Refreshments will be available and are included in the registration fee.
This fun and exciting event is sure to be the one that gets us, and you, "on track"!! Be one of the lucky few (registration is limited to the first 60 people!) to tour the Valley METRO Light Rail facility just east of Sky Harbor Airport and learn about everything involved in moving people across the valley on this state-of-the-art system, from the operation of the system, to the security procedures to the station art! Included will be discussion regarding the fares, the vehicles, the stations, the testing schedule and the supporting safety campaign. And, be one of the first to ride on the METRO Light Rail train!!
METRO is the brand name for Valley Metro Rail Inc., a nonprofit, public corporation charged with the design, construction and operation of the Valley’s light rail system. The brand name of both the Valley’s light rail system, and the agency formed to plan, build and operate the system. METRO was formed as a nonprofit public corporation in 2002 by the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Glendale. The cities of Chandler and Peoria joined the board in 2007; Scottsdale joined the board in 2008.
Did you know...?
- Artworks are incorporated into each light rail station and the Tempe Town Lake Bridge The $6.3 million art budget represents one-half of one percent of the cost of the entire 20-mile light rail system. Studies have shown that public art can increase ridership, reduce vandalism and better connect stations to the neighborhood in which they are situated. The Federal Transit Administration recommends spending one-half to one-percent of the construction budget on art, and there are ordinances in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa that require or recommend that public art be installed as part of capital improvement projects.
- Each METRO vehicle can seat 66 passengers and comfortably accommodate 175 people with a maximum capacity of 226. The light rail system can accommodate up to 12,000 passengers per hour, the same as a six-lane freeway.
- The cost of the 20-mile starter line is $1.4 billion including financing costs. Funding sources included a $587 million federal New Starts grant and $59 million in an Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant. The rest is funded with local sales taxes in Phoenix and Tempe, and General Fund monies in Mesa, with a small portion of the 20-mile starter line funded by the county’s Proposition 400 half-cent sales tax.
- The noise generated by a METRO train is actually lower than ambient noise level of street traffic and will not result in a deterioration of the pre-construction noise levels. The train bell is 50 decibels, about the volume of a telephone ring. The train horn is very loud but is only used when needed to prevent accidents.
- The METRO light rail system is emission-free because it is powered by electrical power. The METRO system is expected to reduce airborne emissions by more than 12 tons each day compared to emissions associated with the same amount of passengers in cars.
About our Speaker: Gary Flunoy is Business Outreach / Area Coordinator with METRO Light Rail. He has been with the Light Rail project since its inception in 2000.

Cleveland Roundtable meetings & events
|
Description: Rising fuel prices, highway and railroad yard congestion are leading logistics professionals toward waterborne freight. Cleveland’s geographic location is one of its best assets-where water, rail, and highway meet. In particular, the Great Lakes offer Cleveland companies a direct international connections through the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Cleveland CSCMP roundtable cordially invites you to a dynamic water modal session. Don't miss the opportunity to cut costs on freight and exchange ideas with the logistics industry in our region. Our topic: The Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Port of Authority
The Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Port Authority was awarded its sixty Robert J. Lewis Seaway Pacesetter Award in 2006 by the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. This award is presented to ports with significant increase in international cargo tonnage. Existing Port facilities include nine berths and 6,500 linear feet of dock space. Docks are maintained at the full 27’ Seaway depth and are capable of handling bulk, breakbulk, RO/RO, and containers. The docks connect to three major Interstates (I-71, I-90, I-80) and two major railroads (NS, CSX)
In the future, the Port plans to relocate to a new grassroots facility. This new facility will be designed with state-of-the-art equipment to handle the abovementioned products, and in particular, containers. The future plans as well as existing capabilities will be further discussed.
Our speaker: Stephen Pfeiffer, Vice President of Maritime Services
Stephen Pfeiffer is responsible for daily operations of the port, including facility management, business development, and marketing. Before joining the Port in 1988, he held positions at ports in New Orleans, Philadelphia, and New York. His experience includes stevedoring and terminal operations at general cargo facilities and bulk terminals. Pfeiffer earned a degree in marine transportation from the US Merchant marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. He has a US Coast Guard license as Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage and is a commissioned ensign in the US Navy. He serves on the American Association of Port Authorities Operations Committee and is a member of numerous local and regional maritime-related organizations. |

Description: Transportation: Trends and Issues in Challenging Times – October 16
Most of us are acutely aware of today’s difficult economy – and the resultant effects on the transportation industry and our businesses. For some transportation companies, current industry pressures and reductions in freight volume have constrained the ability to raise rates, other than for fuel recovery – while many other goods-producing and service firms are facing the highest transportation costs as a percentage of revenue in many years.
We’re pleased to bring you the perspective of Chip Smith, President of Twin Modal Inc., who will provide his view on the current state of logistics and transportation: capacity issues, the impact of fuel prices, shifts in mode and service models to create opportunities for cost savings, and mergers and acquisitions in the industry – just to name a few of the areas where his insight will help you to understand and respond to the volatility that these issues can cause.
