During the spring and summer of 2008, C. John Langley Jr., Ph.D., of the Georgia Institute of Technology, with Capgemini, DHL, and Oracle, conducted an extensive study about using third party logistics (3PL) services in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

From 1996 to 2008, the Annual Third Party Logistics Study has helped to identify and track key trends and views of the third-party logistics industry from the people who use 3PL services.

Over its 13-year history, each annual study has addressed the key issues in logistics and the 3PL industry in an increasingly broader range of user industries and regions.

Study Objectives
This study provides insights into customers’ use of 3PL services across several key industries and regions worldwide. Considering that total global 3PL revenues last year were approximately US$370 billion, outsourced logistics services continue to represent a significant portion of overall logistics and supply chain expenditures. The major findings of this year’s 3PL study are:

  • Summarize the current use of 3PL services
  • Identify customer needs and how well 3PL providersare responding to those needs
  • Understand how customers select and manage 3PL providers
  • Examine why customers outsource - or elect not to outsource - to 3PL providers
  • Look into key issues relating to 3PL use, including provisions of integrated service offereings, green supply china, and supply chain security
  • Provide a strategic assessment for the future of the 3PL industry
