The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) released the 19th Annual "State of Logistics ReportŪ" on June 18, 2008 in Washington, DC. The report, titled "The New Face of Logistics," was delivered by Rosalyn Wilson. The "State of Logistics Report®" is widely used by supply chain and logistics professionals and organizations as the premier benchmark for US logistics activity.
To summarize the "State of Logistics Report®": Growth in the US business logistics system slowed significantly in 2007, registering only a 7% increase, compared to the double-digit growth in 2005 and 2006. Business logistics costs were $1.4 trillion, an increase of $91 billion over 2006, making it the fourth consecutive record high for logistics costs. For the first time since 2000, business logistics costs surpassed the 10% threshold, rising from 9.9% to 10.1% of the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The overall economy slowed measurably and even stalled at times in 2007, dampening consumer spending, creating excess inventory in the system, and driving down the demand for transportation. However, as demand waned in the US and its dollar weakened against other currencies, the demand for US exports increased, shoring up freight volumes.
